Connect Google Analytics to your website.
Google Analytics shows you how people find and use your website: which pages they visit, where they came from and what device they used. It is free. You view your reports in Google Analytics; Comet adds everything your website needs.
Last updated: 24 September 20261. Create a Google Analytics account (if you don’t have one)
- Go to analytics.google.com and sign in with your Google account.
- Choose Start measuring, give your account a name (your business name is fine) and continue.
- Create a property. This is your website in Google Analytics. Pick your time zone and currency.
- When asked where to collect data, choose Web. Enter your website’s address and a name for it, then choose Create stream.
Google may then show you a block of code to install. You don’t need it. Comet adds Google Analytics for you. You only need the Measurement ID.
2. Find your Measurement ID
- In Google Analytics, open Admin (the gear icon, bottom left).
- Under your property, choose Data collection and modification → Data streams.
- Choose your website’s stream.
- Copy the Measurement ID. It starts with G- and looks like
G-ABC123456.
Not the right one? IDs that start with UA- belong to the old version of Google Analytics, which Google has retired. GTM- is a Google Tag Manager container, and AW- is Google Ads. Comet needs the G- one.
3. Connect it in Comet
- Open your website in Comet.
- Choose your account button (top right), then Analytics & cookies.
- Paste your Measurement ID and choose Connect.
- Publish your website. Google Analytics is added to your live website when you publish, not before.
After publishing, Comet checks your live website. When it says Active on published website, Google Analytics is installed. It can take a while, sometimes up to a day, for activity to appear in your Google Analytics reports. The Realtime report usually shows visits within a few minutes.
Each Comet website has its own setting, so different websites can use different Google Analytics properties.
4. What your visitors see
When Google Analytics is connected, your website shows a small cookie banner. Nothing is measured until a visitor chooses Accept analytics. If they choose Reject analytics, Google Analytics never loads for them.
Visitors can change their mind at any time using the Cookie settings button in the bottom-left corner of your website. You can also add your own link anywhere on your site by pointing it to #cookie-settings.
Comet always switches off Google’s advertising features and never sends names, email addresses, phone numbers or anything typed into your forms to Google Analytics.
You can change the banner’s message and choose which page it links to as your privacy policy, under Analytics & cookies → Cookie banner wording.
5. Your privacy policy
Please mention Google Analytics in your website’s privacy and cookie policy, and link to it from the cookie banner. Comet’s banner is a helpful starting point, but it can’t guarantee your website meets the rules in every country. As the website owner, you’re responsible for making sure your policies suit your visitors.
6. Disconnecting
- Open Analytics & cookies and choose Disconnect, then confirm.
- Publish your website. Google Analytics is removed from your live website when you publish.
Disconnecting doesn’t delete your Google Analytics account or anything already collected there. You can still view your past reports in Google Analytics.
7. Troubleshooting
- “Changes waiting to be published”: publish your website to apply the change.
- “Unable to verify installation”: a new publish can take a minute to go live. Choose Check again, or publish again.
- No visits in Google Analytics yet: make sure you accepted the cookie banner when testing, and that an ad blocker isn’t blocking Google Analytics in your browser. Visitors who reject cookies or use ad blockers are not counted.
- Downloaded copies of your website don’t include Google Analytics. It only runs on your published website.
